T O P I C R E V I E WCosmicKarma360--MoonfishThe sextile is one of the weaker aspects, so much so that some categorize it as a minor aspect (quincunx, semi-sextile, semi-square, quintile, etc.)So a 4 deg sextile in synastry is probably too much for most astrologers. If it were a square, opposition, or conjunction it'd be more acceptable, still wide but acceptable. My personal idea of orbs in a synastry chart depends on how strong planets work in the natal. Say Venus is a dominate planet in one of your charts it'd probably make the sextile stronger. CosmicKarma360--CeridwenI usually use an orb of 3 degree for a sextile. However, since it is between two personal planets whose signbackgrounds vibe with each other as well, I`d think it might be felt, albeit faintly, like a humming in the background.Though those tighter aspects will be more in the spotlightAmi Anne quote:Originally posted by Moonfish:The sextile is one of the weaker aspects, so much so that some categorize it as a minor aspect (quincunx, semi-sextile, semi-square, quintile, etc.)So a 4 deg sextile in synastry is probably too much for most astrologers. Do people disagree on that?------------------Passion, Lust, Desire. Especially hard aspects.Sextiles aren't that strong, I agree, but they still give a positive vibe. It's better to have some of them -even with a wide orb- than not have them at all, imo.Got Gemini?? quote:Originally posted by Doux Rêve:I actually always consider wider orb aspects.I don't understand why people dismiss them so quickly.Of course they may not be felt as strongly as other, tighter aspects but imo they should be considered because after some time they usually become more obvious in the relationship dynamics. Personally I have felt the STRONGEST effect of transits with an 1 degree orb only, hence the 2 degree synastry orb for "activated aspects".However, orbs do not work like a trigger to switch then on and off; they start faintly, become sharper, more focused and then slowly unfocus again until they fade away in the distance. But in my experience those aspects that are being very tight, usually take centre stage, and those are the ones that interest me predominantly, even though the others may still have an effect. Also, using very big orbs opens the portals to a certain temptation of over-stating a 9 degree Venus-Mars trine as opposed to the 2 degree Venus-Saturn square for example. But eventualy of course you have to see the pattern.Anyway, in my observation people who are very close and affect each other greatly usually also have very exact aspects, and these will describe the basic themes in a relationship very clearly.Of course I can only speak from my perspective and experience; and everyone is invited to disagree, just if I am looking at a synastry, don´t expect me to check for aspects with orbs greater than 5 degrees. Won`t happen.* But that`s just my personal take on it. --------------------* unless these wide orbs are part of a larger pattern, which also includes other tighter aspects. Also I will always take the elemental background into account no matter if there is an aspect or not.I am very drawn to Air or Fire Moons (Libra, Aries, Sagittarius especially) personally, and I guess the reason is that they are in harmony with my stellium in Sag including Sun, Mars, ASC and DESC-ruler and my Moon in Aquarius. However, no aspects - no action, no matter how compatible people are.I also notice though that wider orbed aspects may be felt eventually, but after a certain amount of time.Sometimes it almost seems like the very exact orbs are felt instantly, sometimes almost subconsciously, or compulsive, while wider orbed aspects somehow allow for more space and development and awareness. But I cannot prove it, gotta observe this phenomenon a bit more.
